Why Understanding the NEST Marking Scheme is 50% of the Battle
Many students with exceptional physics or mathematics skills fail to get a rank in NEST simply because they fall victim to the Section-wise Minimum Admissible Score (SMAS) or mismanage negative marking.
In this guide, we break down the mathematical formula behind NEST evaluation so you can plan your exam strategy with precision.
1. NEST Exam Pattern at a Glance
| Feature | Details |
|---|
| Mode of Examination | Computer-Based Test (CBT) across India |
| Duration | 3 Hours 30 Minutes (210 Minutes) |
| Number of Sections | 4 Sections: Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology |
| Questions per Section | 17–20 Questions per section (MCQs & numericals) |
| Marks per Section | 60 Marks per subject section |
| Total Marks in Question Paper | 240 Marks |
| Maximum Merit Score | 180 Marks (Best 3 subjects only) |
2. The Two-Tier Cutoff System: SMAS and MAS
To be included in the official NEST Merit List, a student must satisfy two mandatory conditions:
Tier 1: Section-wise Minimum Admissible Score (SMAS)
For each of the 4 sections, the average of the top 100 scores (MA) is calculated.
The SMAS for general category candidates is 20% of MA:
ext{SMAS} = 20% imes MA
For OBC-NCL candidates, SMAS is 90% of General SMAS. For SC/ST/PwD, SMAS is 50% of General SMAS.
Rule: If you score 50/60 in Physics, 50/60 in Chemistry, 50/60 in Math, but fail SMAS in Biology (e.g., getting 0 marks when SMAS is 5 marks), you will NOT get a merit rank!
Tier 2: Overall Minimum Admissible Score (MAS)
The average of the top 100 total scores across the country (TA) in best-3 subjects is calculated.
The MAS for general category candidates is 50% of TA:
ext{MAS} = 50% imes TA
Candidates scoring below MAS are not allotted any rank even if they cleared individual SMAS.
3. Historical Cutoff Trends (2021–2025)
The table below illustrates the typical score ranges required for top ranks:
| Target Category | Score Range (out of 180) | Predicted Percentile | Typical All India Rank (AIR) |
|---|
| NISER Top Tier | 135+ | 99.5%+ | AIR 1 – 50 |
| Safe NISER Selection | 110 – 134 | 97.5% – 99.4% | AIR 51 – 250 |
| Safe CEBS Mumbai | 90 – 109 | 92.0% – 97.4% | AIR 251 – 650 |
| Waitlist / Special Rounds | 75 – 89 | 83.0% – 91.9% | AIR 651 – 1500 |
4. Strategic Recommendations for Test Day
Secure SMAS First (First 30 Minutes):
- Spend 25–30 minutes answering 3 to 5 easy, direct questions in your weakest/4th subject. Once you have banked ~8–12 marks, you are safe from SMAS elimination.
Maximize Core Strengths (Next 120 Minutes):
- Devote 40 minutes each to your 3 primary subjects. Aim for 35–45 marks per section.
Avoid Guesswork on Tricky MCQs:
- Every wrong answer costs you
-1 mark. 5 wrong guesses cancel out an entire correctly solved question!
Practice on Authentic CBT Simulators:
- Train on the exact NEST CBT simulator at
